There are great number of herbs that work through the water. Some will calm and soothe aching muscles, some clear the congestion of a small child while others will lull you into a restful sleepy time mood.

The heat of the water mixed with certain herbs can help to stimulate and refresh a body, while others heal the mind and body. As early as recorded history, the pleasure of herbal bathing has been documented. The fragrances in the Roman Baths were considered to be the most beautiful in all of the world at the time. Today hydrotherapy is still used regularly by not only homeopathic doctors, but physicians of all kinds for the treatment of arthritis.

Today, many do not even take the time to sink into a hot bath to relax. The hectic lifestyle demands the quick showers. Knowing how to prepare an herbal bath can be an exotic and sensual break from reality. The simplest way to prepare an authentic herbal bath is to take the selected herbs and tie them into a piece of cheesecloth, leaving the string long enough to dangle beneath the running water. Let the bundle steep in the hot water before settling in.

To get the full benefit of an herbal bath you will need to watch the temperature of the water. If you are looking to relax sore muscles the water should be warm ( 96 - 98). To stimulate the body a cooler temperature is needed (70-85). Higher temperatures will increase sleepiness. Be careful of hot baths, not only can it scald your skin when the water is above 104 degrees it will actually dehydrate the body and skin. If is dangerous for people who have diabetes, nerve disorder or high blood pressure to take baths over 99 degrees.

There a number of different types of herbal baths. Water by itself can heal and soothe, adding certain types of herbs to the water will increase benefits. Different people find different formulas that work better for them.
