You have played hockey from pee wee to becoming the captain of your high school hockey team. Hockey is the only thing you love to play. Unfortunately, getting recruited to play college hockey is a lot more daunting than you would imagine. Currently the NCAA allows each division 1 program 18 scholarships for men and 18 for women; Division 2 teams are limited to 13.5 to men and 18 to women. A majority of Div I and II schools use equivalence scholarships meaning that an athletic is offered a partial scholarship. This allows the colleges to recruit more athletes. The competition is fierce which is why many students have turned to recruiting services to market them to different universities.
Academics have to be as important as hockey. Colleges don't just want hockey players, they want good students who are great at hockey.
Contact the coaches of the Universities you are interested in as soon as you are eligible to play. Get yourself known and seen.
Competitive hockey is available at all levels. D3 schools want to build team reputations, and often times offer more scholarship money to attend.
The key is still going to be your academic grades and SAT scores regardless of where you attempt to play college hockey.
There are some untapped scholarship programs that are really not well known. The National Junior College Athletic Association sponsors men's hockey. It is quite competitive and scholarships are available. Many times the NCAA offer full scholarships. The key here is that junior and community colleges do not have recruiters; so you have to go to them. This is a viable option and still allows you to remain eligible to play Div I College hockey under NCAA regulations.
Another scholarship is the Amateur Hockey Association which offers high school seniors registered with the USA Hockey Association a chance for a scholarship through an essay program. There are two available: one always goes to a New Jersey Senior and the other a senior from Pennsylvania or Virginia. This is a $1,000 one time scholarship.
Pittsburgh Penguins Scholarships
The Penguins Alumni Association has a scholarship of $2,000 for a senior in Western Pennsylvania.
There are a number of these smaller scholarships available from different Hockey Organizations. If your dream is to play hockey, and you are dedicated, committed, and maintain your academics there are programs available to make your dreams come true.
