The first mask was worn by a hockey player named Clint Benedict in 1920 and was to protect his broken nose. The famous fiberglass mask depicted in the Friday the 13th movie will remain a hockey icon. Today the goalie masks are not so well known by which of the two styles are used, but by the exotic paintings NHL goalies have painted on their masks.
The second, more common mask is one that is fiberglass with a cage attached in the middle. They are generally used at all levels of hockey with the belief that they can better withstand impacts of the hockey puck. The back of the head is different as well. Most helmets are a two piece unit held together by screws. The single piece units are not cost effective but are arguably the safest mask to wear.
The changes in the hockey masks were marked by the change in how goalies play. Before goalies began wearing mask, rarely would you see them on their knees making saves for fear of serious head injuries.
In choosing a mask for your child to use, most minor and youth leagues require the mask be certified. The cat-eye cage is the most popular and meets the certification standards of the HECC CSA and CE. It has an improved visibility than other styles with the angled wires. Be careful when selecting a cat eye cage style, as there are one's on the market that are not certified due to the fact the holes between the wires are large enough for a stick to go through.
The Ringette cage uses a different style of wiring that is more like a chain link fence appearance with diagonal wiring and horizontal wiring that create a ring effect. These are also certified for use in most leagues.
The major difference is preference by the goalie wearing them. The most important criteria you need to look for is a helmet that is certified or you might be benched.
