A small town in Minnesota where it is said that the birth of a great things in American Hockey were born called Eveleth is the home to the US Hockey Hall of Fame. The USA Hockey association recently assumed the responsibility for selection of new inductee's. With the controversy surrounding the more well known Hockey Hall of Fame in Canada, The United States Hockey Hall of Fame was opened in 1973 as a "National Shrine of American Hockey". This was to be America's way to showplace the legends of the games both professional and amateur members of the hockey world. There are over 130 members to date, including two Olympic teams. There is a enshrine called the "Great Wall of Fame" that immortalizes the best moments of American Hockey.

Anyone can be nominated from the athletes themselves to coaches, referees, or support people as long as they have made an exception contribution to hockey in the United States. You must be a US citizen whether born or naturalized (all the committee can select even those who are not) to be nominated. On top of just having made a contribution to the sport, nominees must have distinguished themselves by character as well. This is far different than the cousin Hall of Fame. The selection committee looks at sportsmanship and contributions off the ice rink during their selection process.
