What Is A Hat Trick? Where Did It Originate?

There is as much legend and superstition surrounding the origin of the hat trick as there is surrounding the Stanley Cup. What is a hat trick? Scoring a goal in hockey is a feat unto itself. Scoring three goals in one game is even more astounding. The term "hat trick" has been linked to hockey to describe this feat. There term hat trick has some great urban legends associated with it. One of the legends told most often is about a man named Sammy Tetef who changed his name to Taft. Sammy lived in Canada operating a hatery. As the legend goes, whenever someone would score three goals in a game, Sammy would send them a hat from his store.
The first known use of the term "hat trick" was in the Victorian Era when magicians would pull out three hats, one after another from the hat. An amazing feat of magic, but is it really the origin of the hat trick?
Many players go their entire NHL career without ever scoring a goal let alone a hat trick. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky has a record 50 hat tricks from 1979-1999. A hat trick can only be described as an exhilarating play akin to a baseball Grand Slam. Even most fans will never witness a hat trick, but if they do, it is a heart beating exhilaration that they will not soon forget.
In the NHL it is customary for fans to throw a baseball hat on the ice whenever a player scores the admirable feat of a hat trick in a sign of appreciation and respect for the player. Most players autograph and donate the hats to their favorite charities. This custom was started in Ontario with the Biltmore Mad Hatters. The owner Mr. Biltmore would throw his top hat to the ice when one of his players scored three goals. Could this be the origin of the hat trick?
A natural hat trick is used for the even rarer times when a player scores three back to back goals without anyone else scoring a goal in between. All hockey players can agree on the excitement of seeing a hat trick, but what is the true origin of the hat trick?
In Cricket a hat trick is when a bowler takes three wickets by three successive balls. This entitled him to be presented by his club with a new hat. Hockey borrowed the term from the game of Cricket.
Regardless of legends and truths, to see your favorite player score a hat trick is the dream of many NHL fans today.
