Lord Stanley's Cup, the most treasured and sought after trophy in all sports. The quest culminated when Cup fever sets in. When you can almost taste drinking champagne out of the bowl. The history and legacy of the Stanley Cup goes beyond hockey fans. It is like a legend all by itself.

When the quest is done and the Cup is presented, it is the only trophy in all of pro sports that is presented to the Captain of the newly crowned NHL Stanley Cup champion rather than to a coach or owner. However, in 2001 the Cup was hoisted by someone else first. I still can remember the image like it happened last week. Being a New Englander, The Boston Bruins were the team to watch. Our favorite son, Ray Bourque had been denied the right to hoist the Cup. When he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, I did not know a single Bruin's fan who was not routing for the Avalanche. In the 7th game of the 2001 Finals, after 22 years of playing, Ray Bourque was handed Lord Stanley's Cup to hoist up by then captain, Joe Sakic. The room I was in that night, not a dry eye would have been found. It was if every Bruin's fan had just been crowned The Stanley Cup Champion.

The Stanley Cup is the most coveted trophy in the world. Regardless of whether you are a hockey fan or not, you have heard of "The Cup", "Lord Stanley's Cup". It is surrounded by some of the oldest legends and traditions in all of sports. Unlike any other sport, the trophy is passed on each year to the new crowning champion of hockey. It contains the names of every winning player, coach, management and owner of the winning team.

Originally the cup was made of silver and inscribed the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and was donated by Lord Stanley of Preston back in 1892 to the top ranking amateur ice hockey club in Canada. The history of the cup from that original cup to the current Cup is a story in of it's self. The "gentlemen's agreement" between the old National Hockey Association and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association changed the meaning of the cup. Now it was two separate leagues crowning the champion of their respective clubs to compete for the "Holy Grail" of Hockey. When the NHL, after a series of mergers, became what we know the National Hockey League in 1947, the Cup remained as the prize every hockey player across the world wanted to hoist in the air and give the traditional kiss on its side as the winning lap around the rink was made.

During the evolution of hockey , this trophy has always been a coveted Cup to claimpossession of. During this evolution period, the Cup was commonly known as the "Challenge Cup". Any team in any league could challenge the current holder of the Cup for rights to lay their own claim upon it.

The Cup has been awarded every year since with only two exceptions. The first was in 1919 when a flu pandemic broke out and no challenges were made. Then again in 2005 when the famous lock out that canceled the 2004-2005 season. That lock out resulted in a change to The Cups requirements. On February 7, 2006 as a result of a small group in Ontario, Canada filing suit against the NHL resulted in a settlement which amended the "rules" of Lord Stanley's Cup. As of 2006, the Cup can now be awarded to a non-NHL team should the NHL ever cancel its season for any reason.

Here are some facts you may not know about the legendary Cup:

* The first Stanley Cup Champions: The Montreal Hockey Club (commonly called the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association).

* Lord Stanley never saw a Stanley Cup championship game, nor did he ever present the Cup.

* The Stanley Cup is the only trophy in professional sports that has names engraved upon its chalice as well as its rings and base.

* The canceled season was acknowledged with the words "2004/05 Season Not Played".

* There are actually three Cups: the original bowl, the authenticated Cup, and the replica at the Hall of Fame. The original bowl purchased by Lord Stanley is currently displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario.

* Two members of the Stanley Cup victors have had their babies baptized in the chalice.

I have seen it in person but not touched it. The history contained in the trophy itself is amazing.
