Learning self-esteem basics has to start with what self-esteem is and isn't and how it affects daily life. Self-esteem is what determines whether or not you live a fulfilled, happy and successful life. With poor self-esteem life will be a struggle to deal with, you will lack motivation and you will have a very lack luster list of expectations for yourself. The six keys to self-esteem were first established by Nathaniel Branden who is a psychologies who specializes in self-esteem issues. His layout is a wonderful model of the components of self-esteem.
Self-esteem is not the pat on the back feeling you get when others commend you on something. It is truly based on solid principals that make up the character of a person. Positive self-esteem comes only through personal growth and development. It is vastly different then ego; in fact in some ways it is the exact opposite of ego.
Key one - Living consciously
When a person chooses to be conscious of their thoughts, feelings, decisions, and how behaviors impact others. This conscious choice allows a person to see things with a complete clarity of mind.
Key two - Self-Acceptance
When a person chooses to accept themselves exactly as they are including the good, bad, and the ugly; it is then that they can begin to realize that no one is perfect. With is acceptance a person can realize that they are truly unique and realize what effects of character they need to work on becoming a more resourceful being.
Key three - Self-Assertiveness
When a person has the ability to stand up for themselves will be more successful. This allows a person the ability to ensure that in every situation that arises they will be in a "win - win" situation as they stood up for what they personally believe in. There is an old saying that goes a person must stand for something else they be liable to fall for anything. This self-assertiveness to stand up for themselves ensures they will remain in a positive mindset unaffected by the negativism surrounding them.
Key four - Purposeful Living
When a person ensures that they have self-discipline to not only identify what their personal purpose is, develop the plan to reach it, but also the ability to have the self-discipline themselves to do the work to achieve their purpose filled goals.
Key five - Integrity
Integrity is having the ability to be true to yourself. Defining what your personal values, principals and moral code of ethics are ensures that your private mindset will match your public actions. The gift of integrity is the ability to live life honestly and openly in dealings with everyone they come in contact with.
Key six - Self-Responsibility
The ability to take personal responsibility for your own actions and behaviors are a direct result of the previous five keys. Self-responsibility allows a person to be in control of their own life and the results of their achievements. Self-responsibility places a person in complete control over their own destiny.
When all six keys are applied to life it will create a positive self-esteem that will equate into personal growth and success.
